What is an ASP?

An ASP is an Application Service Provider. Is it similar to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) which provides an Internet connection and hosting. Application Service Providers (ASP) provide Web-based access to software.

Since access to web-based software applications is through a web browser, it is not necessary to update and maintain each user's software on their PC - the web application is installed on a web server and from there, users gain quick and timely access to the application, 24/7, from anywhere in the world.

Users typically pay a monthly or yearly fee to the ASP for the use of its web-based software applications.
